The Art of Writing

Today, let us speak about the art of writing. Specifically, writing stories. Now, I want you to know that what I’m about to say isn’t a hard and fast rule about writing – but it has helped me and it’s how I’ve written stories. I know that we have this idea that we should plan out the arc of our story before we start writing. The introduction, the rising action, the climax, the falling action, and the denouement (fancy word for the ending). Listen – there is nothing wrong with having your story planned out. If you know how your story will pan out, then that is great! Really! That’s awesome! But for all the writers out there who don’t have this story planned out, and have only an idea, a concept, a character – relax. Just start writing. I don’t believe that we need to know the entire story before we start writing it. I think half the fun is enjoying the writing process. It's not knowing what will happen next. It's simply writing, and then you get a good idea, and your heart lights up, and suddenly, a character, a scene, an event you never thought of spills out of you. So relax, my friend. Just start writing. If all you have is an idea – start writing it. Don’t worry about where it goes. That’s the fun part! Sometimes, I just write stuff. Does it always go somewhere? No. Most of the things written I don’t think I’ll ever use. But it got me writing, and it may have sparked the right idea for the right story that I’m supposed to be writing. All is well. Just start writing. Your Heavenly Father loves you, and He has a story for you to tell. Just go write it.

Remember, you are deeply loved.
